Hopes and Dreams
13The premise of the series is stated most directly by its production process. Each work is built in poured layers of epoxy resin. A layer cures before the next is added, and an element set into an early pour stays at that depth for the life of the object. The surface finishes flat and glossy. What lies beneath it remains visible and remains out of reach.
Bayraktar takes this process as a description of how experience accumulates and amounts to a life. Things settle at the depth at which they arrived and continue to register from there.
The motifs operate on one axis. A balloon rises according to what it holds. A boat sits low according to what it carries. Both are objects whose position is set by a relation between load and lift, and in a poured field they function as measures. Where a form sits, and how it sits in relation to the others, is the content of each work.
The field is circular and in various colors like golden yellow or pale blue, flecked with darker pigment. The artist’s choice of colors read as sky and as water at once. Wire tails trail from each balloon and curl the way a line curls in liquid, so the medium holding the objects stays undecided. The circular format contributes to this. Due to the nature of its form, a circle holds its edge at equal distance in every direction, so position stays comparative and orientation arrives only through the tails.
While the work stems from Bayraktar’s autobiographical notes, these works stay unassigned to any particular biography. What they set out is the condition of carrying, held apart from any account of what is carried.
